Quay rent: in addition to container hire, the shipping company often charges its clients compensation for use of a storage space at the terminal outside the free period. This is to ensure that the container is emptied and made available for reuse in the short term. This Quay rent is sometimes referred to by carriers as demurrage and sometimes referred to as storage.
